This is just a quick look I did before going out to RCSC this week. All purple everything!

While browsing Sephora the other day, I stumbled upon a product I've long been interested in trying: Smashbox's O-GLOSS.

I pulled out all the stops for my birthday bash with Rock Creek Social Club at Recess last week. From the dress to the nails to the lashes, I was DETERMINED to--yet again--be the baddest bish in the room.
To start off my look, I busted out a brand new pair of Wispies, copped the night before while beauty shopping with my homegirl Ashley:

This past spring and summer I became obsessed with NYX's neat little eyeshadow pencils. The shadows come in chubby pencil form in a rainbow of colors, and are perfect for use as a base under powder eyeshadows or even by themselves. I tend to use mine under powder eyeshadows to make the look really *pop* and last longer, though I do notice creasing after a few hours of wear. I've heard you can remedy this by using another base (like Urban Decay Primer Potion) underneath the eyeshadow pencil, then applying your shadow as usual. But for the price ($4 on NYX's website, though you can probably get them a little cheaper at your local beauty supply store) and amount of product you get, NYX's eyeshadow pencils aren't anything to scoff at.
I love experimenting with different looks and colors with these. For instance, remember that "secret color" shadow I used in my one year anniversary look? Well, that shadow has a tendency to lighten and add sparkle and a dash of pink iridescence to whatever shade you apply it over. It's especially striking applied over a pink or purple base:
There's an infinite number of shadow and base combos to have fun with; NYX's Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils make it a little easier (and cost-efficient!) to get those lids poppin'

I don't know how many times I've tried looking up sample pictures of a particular shade of makeup and been unable to find some, especially for those of us with a little extra melanin to spare. To help those of you who've also encountered this little predicament, I've gone ahead and swatched my small (but ever growing) stash of blushes.
HBIC
I wanted the makeup for my costume this year to compliment not only the character I was dressed as (Mad Men's frosty Betty Draper), but also my own tastes. Betty's makeup on the show ranges from none at all to very "done" and proper, and it's always tastefully applied and worn.
"Although she is a housewife, Betty is an ex-model, so her makeup is clean but very current for the period," head of makeup for the show, Lana Horochowski, says. "Evening Betty goes a little thicker on the liner and a brighter lipstick, but always coordinated with her clothing."
For the eyes, I started with NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Gold as a base, then an application of Champagne (from a CoverGirl Eyeshadow Quad) over the lid. I drew a cat eye on with N.Y.C. Liquid Eyeliner, did my waterline (aka lower lashline) with Maybelline Define-A-Line in Ebony Black and finished the look off with Maybelline Great Lash BIG Mascara.
Cheeks were blessed with an application of Stila Color Push-Ups in Rose.
Lips were lined with Revlon ColorStay Lipliner in Pink/Rose, then Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice was applied. It was between this color and MAC Impassioned (a bright pink) for the lipstick, but in the end, classic red won.
And that's it! It was harder getting snapped and buttoned into that vintage dress than it was doing Betty's makeup. At least one thing about her isn't too complicated, heh
As you are all aware, fall is here and in full effect. In these early autumn days, transitional wardrobe pieces and color schemes are necessary to seamlessly shift from summer to fall. For example, summer dresses can be paired with fall essentials, like lightweight scarves and blazers, to remain stylish while bracing yourself for cooler temperatures.

I'm a big fan of gradient shading on the eyes. The key is to pick complimentary colors, that way they're easier to blend on the lid. If you're unsure which colors compliment each other best, consult a color wheel. And if you purposefully want your lid colors to clash, invest in good blending tools! For this look I used a regular soft bristled eyeshadow brush to pat on the shadow and a sponge tipped applicator tool to further blend the area where the purple and hot pink meet in the middle of my lid.
For my cheeks, I used Stila's creamy push-up blush in Rose Flash as a base color, then I applied NYX The Ultimate Pearl Shadow (yes, eyeshadow used as a blush folks!) in Gold Pearl over top. I like this combo a lot; first, the cream base helps the powder blush stay on longer, and second, Gold Pearl makes an excellent highlighter/blush. I think it compliments my skintone well.
Lastly, my lovely lips. NYX's African Queen is a gorgeous and bold fuchsia color with purple microshimmer. I love the smell of this gloss; it's a faint artificial cherry smell with no aftertaste. African Queen is the only shade I have of NYX's lip glosses, but if this product's excellent pigmentation, smooth application and great wear time say anything about NYX's other glosses, it certainly won't be my last.

I know everyone's been waiting with bated breath to find out which lip product I decided to return (ha). Well, it was two: the MAC Lipglass in Lychee Luxe and the KORRES Lip Butter in Mango. Pour some on the ground for my returned homies 
I hit up this place called The Cosmetics Company that sells discontinued and discounted brand name makeup--mostly Estee Lauder, but also YSL, Prescriptives, Clinique, and everyone's favorite, MAC. I found this great product there in MAC Slimshines. It's the perfect formula for me: a lipstick/lipgloss combo with sheer yet buildable color. Great for the summer months, when I don't feel like being bothered with the goopy heaviness a true lipstick or lipgloss would leave. I picked a shade that was close to my own skin color but slightly pinker, to avoid that "dead lips" look.

What great packaging, too. I already told you I'm loving the deodorant stick shape of the Cheek Tint, and the Slimshine casing is so sleek and shiny it's like pulling out a work of art every time I apply it, lol. All in all, I'm quite satisfied with my purchases
