Sneaker Pimps Tour ft. Phil Ade, Tabi Bonney, The Cool Kids & Curren$y

Last night I had the privilege of attending the Sneaker Pimps tour, featuring local rappers (including recent SOTDer Phil Ade and Tabi Bonney) as well as some more prominent names, like The Cool Kids and my personal fave: Curren$y! I had a premium spot right on stage and was able to get some great pics in the process.

The club was PACKED.

Phil Ade was one of the first acts to take the stage. He killed it and even fit a little "Toast 2 Life" in his set. Since Phil reps the 368 crew, Raheem DeVaughn made an appearance, too.

Tabi Bonney was up next. He's really on the come-up, the whole front row knew the lyrics to his songs.

After Tabi came The Cool Kids. They did the longest set of anyone that night, probably their whole mixtape and then some. After about five songs of theirs I just wanted Curren$y to come out already confused

Mikey Rocks (back) & Chuck Inglish

About three mic checks later, he did! Spitta's tinier than I expected. I guess that's why he gets high all the time, ha.

And he was decked out in Redskins gear. Can this dude GET any better?!

Unfortch, the Lux Lounge crew cut his set short because the clock rang 2 am. I blame The Cool Kids (sorry dudes) and also the lameness of the club crew. Do you know who this is?!

Anyways, it was an awesome show overall: dope kicks, dope music, and the thrill of seeing one of my fave rappers perform live cool The only thing that would have made the night better was getting backstage to chill with everyone, but security wasn't havin' that. Ah well, maybe when I finally visit Creative Control... now THAT would make for an epic blog post.

Lupe Fiasco ft. B.o.B on The Steppin Lasers Tour/Escape from Atlantic City

I love Lupe Fiasco (this marks my 3rd time seeing him in concert!) and I'm feeling B.o.B's new single, so of course, going to the Steppin Lasers Tour was a must. The DC date was SOLD OUT before I could even get the tickets; the next closest city it was playing was Atlantic City, NJ.

B.o.B was the opener, he played a great set. It really makes me wanna download... I mean buy his album coming out April 27! His sound is reminiscent of old school OutKast to me, heavily influenced by Andre 3000.

B.o.B is homedude on the right

He called some chick up from the audience and sang to her; the bros next to us in the audience were completely wasted screaming, "I LOVE YOU B.O.B!" and saying how that chick "totally jizzed her pants" for getting onstage, lmao.

Next up was Lupe, and I was not disappointed. Everyone was jammin' to the lyrics and hittin' EVERY bar, especially the wasted bros (no pun intended). It was awesome cool

As for Atlantic City... bleh. We were only supposed to be there one night. Since the H.O.B. music stage was in the same hotel/casino where we were staying, it worked out perfectly. HOWEVER (there's always a however)... a series of unfortunate mishaps led to us missing the bus back to DC in the morning, thus extending our AC stay by a whopping 9 hours.

Nine hours walking up and down the boardwalk and beach amid the constant din of slot machines was more of Atlantic City than I ever hoped to see, and I think I've had my fill of it for a while, lol.

One more hour and this would have been me: drunk, assed out & broke in AC. Come to think of it, I bet that's how a lot of people leave AC...

Cue that infamous N.W.A. song...

After we left the old people club, me & my friends Ash, Rob & CJ were ready to get our grub on so we headed to this 24-hr. breakfast spot called The Diner. It was Saturday night though, and the area where The Diner is located is full of bars and drunk people and whatnot, so the police presence in that area was heavier than usual. Just our luck, while trying to find a parking spot (we all rode in CJ's car) WE--the innocent, college-educated, mostly law-abiding black kids--get pulled over.

We were originally pulled over by one cop car and two cops, but I guess because there were four heads in the car, they called for back-up. Less than ten minutes later, there were two cop cars and four cops on us, asking us to roll down our windows.

They asked Rob to get out because he "looked suspicious" and they thought that from the way he was leaning on the middle console in the backseat that he looked drunk.

Uh, ok. One, the man was in a button-down shirt, slacks, and dress shoes with a close cropped haircut. Suspicious? Really? Two, who doesn't lean in the backseat. Three, there were (legal) tints on the window, you couldn't even tell anyone was back there, much less "leaning drunkenly."

They frisked Rob and told him to get back in the car. They asked for his and CJ's IDs then went back to their cars for a minute (I'm talking a hot minute too, like 25 minutes). Me & Ash were just holding down the passenger's side, chillin'.

When they returned, we asked the cops why they pulled us over. The original cop said CJ's view was obstructed by the air freshener and a pair of earmuffs he had hanging off his rear view mirror. The earmuffs I can understand, but the air freshener. Really. Mad nosy people in cars had already passed us with hella $hit hanging off their rear views! Fuzzy dice, Mardi Gras beads, rosaries... sheeit.

Accordingly to el popo, they pulled us over for THAT reason, then, SURPRISE, they found a "suspicious black male" in the backseat, too. Bonus! Since Rob was not drunk or hiding bottles or drugs in the back, they ticketed CJ with having a passenger who wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Oh yeah, and here's the kicker you guys: the cop wasn't even going to ticket us until my homegirl Ash asked for his badge number... NICELY (our entire conversation with this douchebag was civil. No need to cause any MORE problems, right). Then--can you believe it?!--he gets a little attitude and says "Well since you want my badge number, you can get it off the ticket I'm gonna write you."

!!!!!

One hour and $30 in tickets later, we were on our way again (NOT TO THE DINER, of course).

That whole ordeal was ridiculous. Before heading to our new destination, IHOP, we went to the nearest police precinct and got some info on filing a complaint against a cop.

There's no need to put up with anything like what we went through--and I know there's people out there with even worse experiences with the law.

Know your rights folks, and fight back when you can.

Old man game

Have you ever celebrated your best friend's birthday at a hilariously age-inappropriate club and been hit on repeatedly by men (or women) old enough to give your dad/moms a run for his/her money? No? Well this is how that scenario might play out...

Me: [swaying along to the music, trying to ignore the strange nursing home and Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds smell of the club]

Much older dude: Hey sweetheart.

Me: No habla ingles [continues to jam alone]

MOD: Wanna dance?

Me: No habla ingles!
Well, that didn't work and somehow I found myself two-stepping with someone easily old enough to be my dad. At this point the DJ shouted out something about the Redskins and how Dallas sucks and even though I don't follow football like that I felt compelled to show support for the home team.
Me: Yeah! Booo Dallas!

MOD: I know that's right ::high five::
I was just grateful he didn't notice I speak perfect English redface I guess that's that old man memory for you. Having bonded over our mutual hatred of the Dallas Cowboys as Kool & the Gang played in the background, we chatted.
MOD: So what do you do on the weekends?

Me: Kick it with my homies.

MOD: You married?

Me: Uh, no.

MOD: Got a boyfriend?

Me: YES. He's a ninja/Gladiator/master marksman and stuff.

MOD: That's nice [EDIT: Really? Looks like we have a persistent one, folks]. Got any kids?
I was getting tired of these questions. I look like I could be your daughter, sir. Gross out. Didn't stop me from answering him though.
Me: Yep, five. By seven different men.

MOD: I have a 14-year-old by my first wife.
PAUSE. Damn your daughter's almost as old as me (almost). And first wife? How many have you had? Right then the song ended, putting me out of my misery.
Me: Yeeeaaahhh... I have to go stand over here now. Nice talking to you! << More lies
I was barely off the dance floor before I was accosted by Bachelor #2, some super old head (I'm talking, like, 70-75 here) who'd been putting it on ALLLL the middle-aged ladies that night ::shudders::
MOD #2: Hey young lady, how's 'bout a dance?

Me: No thanks.
Right then a buddy of mine from the crew I came with helped a sista out ("I'm with him") and we two-stepped our a$$es to the bar.

Other highlights of the night:
  • That old broad who almost shanked us for putting our coats & purses on "her" table. B*tch, chill. And put your wig on straight next time.
  • That 60-year-old dude who "danced" (it was more like "interpretive seizure") 100 variations of The Robot. And yes, he did challenge one of our crew to a dance off *smh*. I would have videotaped that hot mess with my ~*iPhone*~ but I didn't want to encourage him, lol.
  • CJ tackling not one, but TWO cougars. At the same time! They love that young meat. Get it.
  • The two fights that almost broke out, one as I entered the club, then one as we left. Dag old people, get it together, JEEZ.
  • Getting pulled over and ticketed by the cops on our way to The Diner*.
  • Saying "Eff The Diner" and going to IHOP instead.
* MAJOR SIGH and SMH at that whole situation. I'll explain in detail in another post.

Date #1: Adams Morgan (Part II)

OK, so we're in his car getting ready to leave, when the Kamikaze shots come back to say hello. SO EMBARRASSED redface Of course something like this would only happen to me, ON THE FIRST DATE. I'm fully convinced I've made a complete a$$ of myself and my date will never want to see me again... but first, I must pass out in the backseat of his car (cue Kanye West's "Drunk & Hot Girls").

So my date is driving past the venue we had just left when one of his friends (who was also present at the cipher) sees what a predicament we're in and offers to drive us back to my house. Date's friend gets in the driver's seat, my date gets in the passenger's seat, and I'm holding the backseat down, of course. Then, as soon as ol' boy offers to drive us home, another car full of his buddies drives right up to the car we're in, and homeboy gets in the back of THEIR car and bounces. Leaves the door open and car running and everything.

"I know he's comin' back," Date says.

Ten minutes later...

"I KNOW he's comin' back." He ain't nevah came back mad Some friends, guy! I think to myself.

"So how're we gonna get home?! You're wasted!" I say.

"I'll think of something! I gotchu," Date says.

Date reclaims the driver's seat* and I resume the fetal position in the backseat of his car.

Maybe 30 minutes later, I manage to prop myself up and slur, "Are we there yet?" Which totally startled my date, who apparently had forgotten I was passed out in the backseat *smh* Right at that moment, his tire blows out. Could this date get any worse?! Oh yes, it can.

"What the eff was THAT?!" I say.

"I think my tire just blew out!" says Date.

I pass out again (how helpful, right? lol). But not before I observe Date excuse himself, then get out the car, see the damage, and start angrily shaking his fists and dancing around mouthing cuss words (I couldn't hear him through the glass window), lmao. It was quite the scene lol

Anyways, somehow he manages to get the car into a gas station, where hopefully someone's around to help him change the tire. Luckily for Date, some crackhead posted up at the station offers his services. But not for free.

"Hey man, I'll help you change that tire for $5 and a screwdriver." A screwdriver though?

"Yeah a screwdriver. To change the tire with, man."

Uh, OK. Gonna need a lil more than a screwdriver to do that, homes. But Date got one out the trunk of his car and Mr. Crackie gets to work. Meanwhile, my date pukes his guts out in not one, but TWO places: In front of a closed CVS (they must have been so thrilled to open the store with THAT loveliness out front, lol) and this alley in back of the gas station.

"Betta not let the cops see you like that, buddy," says the crackhead. Getting morality lessons from a crackhead... yeah neutral You KNOW it's bad when a freakin' crackhead is telling you how to act in public!

Maybe an hour later (still passed out at this point... damn those Kamikazes!), Mr. Crackie has accomplished nothing with that screwdriver. Date confiscates the screwdriver and denies Mr. Crackie's request for $5 for his hour's long attempt at changing the tire. That's when some non-crackish random on a bike rolls through the station and offers to change the tire in exchange for a pack of cigarettes. Score!

So an hour after THAT, we're on the road again. I didn't make it home til 4:30 am and my mom was pissed at me for being out so late. But, maaaan... what a night smile

*I totally do NOT advocate drunk driving. Seriously, I was a member of SADD in high school and everything. But really though, sometimes it's one of those nights. I try to avoid nights like that as much as possible. Trufax!

Date #1: Adams Morgan (Part I)

Apologies for the lack of posts around here... what can I say, the holiday season is upon us confused Doesn't mean I've run out of blogging ideas... hell to the no!

I recently started seeing someone, and our first few dates have been so hilariously fun and random, I just HAVE to share with you guys. So, without further ado, here's the tale of Date #1...

The evening started off well enough. He picked me up at my house and we went to this dope spot in Adams Morgan I had never been to. It was a bar/lounge/tiny stage area type deal, a very cool little venue. That particular night, the place was having their monthly party: basically an open mic, but instead of the lame poetry of DC's most emo, the open mic was a rap cipher. Hotness!

We posted up at the bar and ordered some drinks. The bartender was making them so weak, so even after 3 cranberry & vodkas (him) and 3 rum & cokes (me... my limit when drinking or taking shots of anything is 3, after that I'm DONE) I was barely tipsy. Oh well, I wasn't trying to get wasted on the first date anyways.

We were chatting and whatnot, finishing our drinks and chillin. Seeing our drinks were almost done, the bartender offered us some Kamikaze shots.

"Wanna do shots with the bartender?" he asked us.

We figured it was his way of making up for those weak a$$ drinks.

"Sure," we said.

He made our shots and we downed those joints, figuring that if his drink-making skills were any indication, his shot-making skills would also be sub-par. That's when the cipher started. My date and I moseyed up to the stage area and had a great view of the cipher taking place. We were both having a great time. Not too much later, intermission was called and we went back to our seats at the bar.

"Another shot with me?" the bartender asked.

"OK, why not."

Right when that second shot was beginning to kick in, he whips it on us:

"That'll be $6 for the shots, man."

WTF?! When the bartender offers to do shots with you, that ish is supposed to be on the house. What a douchebag. Being the good sport he is, my date coughed up the dough while I secretly plotted vengeance on that sneaky a$$ bartender evil

Soon the cipher was on again... dudes were killin it! My special fella friend was taping most of it with a borrowed Flip video camera... Imma see if I can track the video down. Really, it was a dope time.

After that, the venue closed and everyone moved outside. This is where things get blurry for me. My date and I were chillin for a bit outside of the place; because he had the Flip video camera, dudes were tryna keep the cipher going in the skreets, lol. Ridiculous what some people'll do when a camera's present rolleyes Anyways, it was cold and getting late, so we head back to his car.

As soon as we get to his car, that's when I completely knock out. Man, those Kamikaze shots did the sneak attack on me, I was DONE. Funnily enough (is "funnily" a word? Meh, Imma roll with it), that's when the evening really started...

So I watched the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie last night...

Two words: PURE HILARITY. Oh man, I hadn't seen that movie since I was, like, 5 years old, hahaha. And for a reason: the movie kinda sucked. But it was an OK sucky, the so-bad-it's-kind-of-good sucky, you smell me?

My favorites growing up were the orange turtle (Michelangelo) and the purple one (Donatello). Turns out they actually have personalities and stuff, I was just digging them because orange and purple were my favorite colors at the time smile

From Wikipedia:

  • Michelangelo — The easy-going and free-spirited Mikey provides much of the comic relief. While he loves to relax, this Turtle also has an adventurous and creative side. He wears an orange mask and wields nunchaku. He is the youngest of the four. He is named after the Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet Michelangelo Buonarroti.
  • Donatello — The brilliant scientist, inventor, engineer, and technological genius. He is perhaps the least violent Turtle, preferring to use his intellect to solve conflicts. He wears a purple mask and wields the bō staff. He is named after the Italian sculptor Donatello.
And they're all addicted to pizza. Awesome! Oops, I mean "cowabunga dude"!

My favorite TMNTs actually describe me, lol. Which turtle(s) was your fave?

Hickies suck

Straight up, this looks like a port wine stain

I'm not really one to put myself on blast like that--I don't think what I did last night is anyone's business but my own--but in certain situations, it's really beyond my control. Hickies are one of those situations. This morning the following conversation ensued:
Mom: What's wrong with your face?

Me (still half asleep): What? That's rude.

Mom: Is that... is that a hickey?!

Me: ::quickly and silently backs out of the room::
Man, hickies are hella embarrassing, yo. I mean, they are a nice reminder of the events of the night before, but if you have parents to face in the morning, or a job to go to, or other "friends" to see that week (I know how some of y'all get down!) a hickey can really eff up your situation. They were cool in high school, though. I remember this one girl coming into school one day, it looked like she had been strangled. But she had the widest grin on her face. She was showing her cheetah neck off to the entire class like show-and-tell! She wore those hickies PROUD.

But I'm not in high school anymore. Even though I'm still young, I feel like I'm a little too old to be brandishing bright red/purple marks all on my cheek, chin, and neck like a vampire victim. Even though in this instance the hickeys were unintentionally given ("Damn girl, I didn't know your skin was THAT sensitive!"), there have been at least a couple guys I've met who leave those joints intentionally, like they're "marking their territory". Well if you're gonna be like that you might as well just pee on me like a dog (**NOT AN INVITE, PERVS!**).

To make myself more presentable and fend off questions of "WTF happened to your neck?!" I got creative and covered that ish up with some concealer and face powder. Worked wonders! The color of the hickey was pretty deep but with the makeup *blended to perfection*, I could barely tell it was there:

I left one uncovered to show the difference. Good, right?!

Unfortch, there's no quick way to get rid of hickies other than makeup, turtlenecks, scarves, etc., the last of which it is waaaay too hot and humid now to even fathom wearing. But they'll be gone in about 5 - 7 days, so it's whatever.

What do you, my lovely readers, think of hickeys? What's your experience with them? Some people find them trashy (unless they are hidden of course), while others find them "really fun," like this dude interviewed by NPR in a little article aptly titled "An Ode to Hickies."

Do share!

"Hoes are your friends, hoes are your enemies" - Ludacris

My friend was telling me about this chick he just met in his apartment complex. She's new to the area and very, um, generous. Within a week of them meeting, she was paying for his gas, his take-out AND smoking him out and letting him drink up her liquor... and he hasn't even touched her, or so he claims. (For the purpose of this story, we're gonna assume there's been no touching.)

Apparently, she has other "booskis," as she calls them, in the complex that she "hooks up" in the same way. She admitted that one of them can see right into her bedroom window and is the jealous type, which we'll get back to later. We suspect she might be a prostitute looking for a pimp.

Anyways, Friend was in her room for whatever reason (uh-huh...) and notices all these little bugs on the bed. BED BUGS.

Already turned off by her girth and (probable) chosen profession, Friend asks, "What are THOSE?"

To which she responds, "Oh, just bed bugs. We all have them [referring to her two other roommates]."

Then, get this y'all, she picks up one of the bugs, sets it on the carpet, and LIGHTS IT ON FIRE.

Now, a couple days ago, I got the opportunity to meet this hot bish (as Friend was telling me this story over the phone, I refused to believe that such a strange, ridiculous person existed. Moreso, that someone I know was actually associating with them. Naturally, I had to see for myself.). I guess what's most surprising about her LIGHTING HER BED BUGS ON FIRE, aside from the sadisticness of it all, is that she was talking to us about her plans to become a veterinarian. Don't bugs count? (P.S. She personally admitted to setting her bed bugs on fire. And has the bites and empty lighter to prove it sad)

Anyways, shortly before I arrive, this chick decides she wants to make chicken for one of her booskis, the one who can see directly into her bedroom ::side-eye:: Since the oven in her apartment is so caked up with old food and burns whenever you turn it on, she decides to cook this man's chicken in Friend's apartment. OK.

On the short walk over to his apartment, her other booski just happens to be walking their way. And Friend's just standing there with this probable hooker carrying her man-of-the-moment's raw chicken in his arms.

AWKWARD.

There was no altercation and Friend thinks he can take the dude in a fight, but still. That's a helluva set-up, getting caught with another man's chicken/chickenhead in your arms.

As they walked away, she said he was probably gonna beat her later for being seen with Friend... even though that guy already has a girlfriend he lives with in the complex (?!). But she seemed so nonchalant about her supposed upcoming beating that Friend wasn't sure (YET AGAIN) whether to believe her or not. And she still wanted to make this nucca's chicken!

So they make it to Friend's kitchen and while the chicken's baking, she tells us her life story (Oh how I wish I had arrived in time to witness the standoff between Friend and Booski #[whatever]). Short version:

- Ex-foster kid
- Has had 8 miscarriages and 1 pregnancy, but that baby died about 3 months ago from SIDS
- From Baltimore (surprise, surprise lmao)
- Is supposedly 20... looks about 38
- Heroine-addict mother, no dad to speak of
- Sells cats on Craigslist

Why would you reveal all this to people you've just met? Well, I did say she was generous earlier. I guess in more ways than one, ha (Sidenote: she gave ME $5 for gas, just for showing up! Probably trying to recruit, pfft).

As Friend was telling me about this girl originally, I refused to believe such ridunkulousness. Now, having heard it directly from the source... I still don't know what to believe. Friend and this hooker chick are BOTH ridunk if any of this is true.

That being said, I find this situation highly entertaining and look forward to hearing about this hot bish again (if Friend doesn't come to his senses and cut off all contact with her first) smile

Happy 4th y'all

Here's a little glimpse of my night last night. Tried taking pics but it's so hard getting the fireworks right when they're going off. It was like a pretty war in the skies... little kids and dogs were losing their minds, lol.

In all my years of living here I've never been downtown to see the fireworks on the Mall. Why, when fireworks are legal in the rest of the city? Fireworks on the Mall seems touristy anyways, why fight all those crowds and traffic when you can go down the street and see them joints for half (or none) of the hassle. But that's just ME.

B-more

I went to Baltimore last night y'all... and I survived! It's funny, but despite their close proximity, DC and B-more don't really gel like that. It's only a 40-min. drive north, but you might as well be driving to a whole nother world, yo.

First off, downtown Baltimore looks like a bomb hit it. There's hella potholes in the street (though, being a driver in DC, this is nothing new), mad abandoned buildings and houses, there's a spotlight and street camera on damn near every other block... and on top of that, don't look at anyone the wrong way or you just might get shot, lol. To my people that watch The Wire, I am not exaggerating when I say it is EXACTLY like that in B-more eek

Ordinarily I wouldn't be up there without a reason. Luckily, I had my trusty 'hood-navigator P with me, who still has friends up there from when he went to Morgan State. With P onboard, I got a nice little tour of Baltimore's seedy underworld. Just kidding, we drove around some neighborhoods and he pointed stuff out smile

Stuff we drove past (cautiously):

  • Tupac's (and that hoodrat Jada Pinkett's) old stomping grounds. P pointed out a playground in B-more that Pac feautured in some video of his... it was full of cracky-looking people when we drove by it
  • Coppin State University, which I had never heard of, but is smack dab in the middle of the 'hood
  • Druid Hill Park. If that name sounds at all familiar, the R&B group Dru Hill took their name from that park
  • A lot of really obvious drug deals. I guess those surveillance cameras aren't working too well, lol...
As hoodtastic as downtown B-more is (P informs me that East and West B-more are the worst parts of the city), as soon as we drove slightly Northeast, things started looking a little safer. Nice houses and lawns, less potholes. What a difference a few miles makes! We noticed these benches out there...

... and LOL'd. Baltimore seems like a depressed city to me. I mean, besides drugs, what other means of income does the city generate? There's no federal government like in DC, no huge tourist draws like Miami or LA or NYC. I think Philly is the same way: a lot of crime and abandoned buildings and whatnot. Sad.

Anyways, P says THE place to check out in B-more is this area called Fell's Point. It's supposed to be B-more's version of Adams Morgan: a lot of bars and a party-in-the-streets type atmosphere. And of course, there's always Baltimore Harbor and the National Aquarium (though it's tourists galore); I used to visit those places every summer when I was younger.

Anyways, one of P's buddies from DC who now makes B-more his home says B-more cats feel the same way we (DC peeps) feel about them: SHOOK, lmao. That's how serious it is! A 40-min. drive makes a WORLD of difference here. Keeping that in mind, I might give B-more another chance, if only to check out this Fell's Point P speaks of.

I wonder what other cities across the US have the same weird-ass relationship DC and B-more do (quite a few, I'm sure)...
